Fort De Soto Star Party

Telescopes on the beach at Fort De Soto for a night of planets, star clusters and Gulf breeze.

About this event

The Gulf side of Fort De Soto gets dark enough to pull in objects most Tampa Bay residents never see. Astronomy volunteers line the beach with telescopes and invite you to look, ask questions and learn the sky at your own pace. Low horizon over the water makes for easy planet spotting, and the sea breeze keeps the viewing steady.

What you'll do

  • Catch Jupiter and its moons low over the Gulf
  • Look through a dozen different telescopes on the sand
  • Ask volunteers how to pick your first scope
  • Watch a satellite pass over the beach
  • Bring a chair and stay for the open viewing hours
