Paynes Prairie Stargazing Night

A ranger-led evening on the prairie lawn with telescopes, constellation stories and a meteor watch.

About this event

Paynes Prairie sits just south of Gainesville, far enough from the lights to put on a real show. Local astronomy club members bring telescopes for close looks at the moon, planets and double stars, while rangers share the stories behind the constellations and a little of the night life on the prairie. Blankets, chairs and red flashlights welcome.

What you'll do

  • Get a close look at the moon's craters through club scopes
  • Hear the constellation stories from a park ranger
  • Learn to find north with the Big Dipper
  • Watch for meteors from the prairie lawn
  • Bring a blanket and stay past the guided portion
