Big Cypress Star Party
Rangers and astronomy volunteers set up scopes on the swamp boardwalk for a night of deep-sky viewing.
About this event
Out in the Big Cypress swamp, away from city glow, the sky fills in fast. Volunteers bring telescopes and binoculars to the boardwalk and point them at whatever is sharpest that night, from Saturn's rings to star clusters you can't see from town. A ranger leads a short sky tour, and the second half of the evening is open viewing at your own pace. Bring bug spray and a red flashlight.
What you'll do
- View Saturn and its rings through a volunteer telescope
- Join the ranger-led constellation tour on the boardwalk
- Learn to read the sky with binoculars alone
- Listen for owls and alligators between viewing rounds
- Stay for the open telescope session until 10:30
