Kissimmee Prairie Star Party

Florida's first dark-sky park opens its prairie to telescopes for a guided night under the Milky Way.

About this event

Kissimmee Prairie Preserve is one of the darkest places left in Florida, and the park hands the night over to the sky. Astronomy club volunteers set up scopes on the open prairie and walk you through the constellations, planets and deep-sky objects visible that night. Rangers keep red lights on hand so your eyes stay dark-adapted, and a short talk covers how the park earned its dark-sky designation.

What you'll do

  • Look through club telescopes at the Orion Nebula and Andromeda
  • Take the red-light prairie walk to the darkest viewing field
  • Hear how the park earned Florida's first dark-sky designation
  • Spot satellites crossing overhead with a ranger
  • Bring a camp chair and stay for the late-night meteor watch
