Teen Marine Biology Field Course

A full day in Sarasota Bay for ages 13–17: plankton tows, seagrass surveys and time in the wet lab.

About this event

Mote educators take a small group out on the research boat in the morning to run plankton tows and pull a seine net through the seagrass, then back to the wet lab to identify what they caught and test water chemistry off the dock. Students keep a field journal, and the day counts toward Florida middle and high school science service hours.

What you'll do

  • Pull a plankton tow from the research boat
  • Identify invertebrates from a seagrass seine net
  • Test salinity and dissolved oxygen on the dock
  • Meet a working marine biologist in the wet lab
  • Finish a field journal you keep
